How to Make Creme De Mûre

Creme De Mûre is a Blackberry liqueur that can be used to accentuate hundreds of cocktail recipes. The one I make is wine-based, which to my mind makes a more complex, less sweet liqueur. The beauty of this recipe is that it will literally last years in your fridge and if you sterilize the bottle you store it in, it’ll last indefinitely. Although it’s wine-based, you don’t have to worry about the wine oxidizing (we pre-oxidized the wine with heat) and going off because we’re making use of those oxidized flavors. That said, I still do recommend storing in the fridge, I’ve tried storing on a shelf and over time it will pick up off-flavors. Also, make sure to store it in an airtight container.

Instructions

  • Add 5 Cups of Blackberries to a large bowl and mash them up with a Potato Masher. You want to break up the berries until they're the consistency of Jam.
  • Add in 1 bottle (750ml) of Medium Bodied Red Wine such as Syrah, Merlot or Sangiovese.
  • Cover the wine berry mixture with a breathable cloth and place in a cool dry place for 48 hours.
  • Next fine strain the liquid discarding the solids.
  • Put the wine mixture into a medium sized pot and add 1.5 Cups of sugar. DO NOT BOIL or you will burn off the alcohol! Just heat the mixture up enough fully incorporate the sugar
  • Take off heat and allow to cool.
  • Once cooled add in between 1/2 to 3/4 Cup Vodka or Gin. I usually use Gin as it makes for a much more flavorful Liqueur.
  • Enjoy!

  1. This is so delicious. I’ll never know how long it will keep because it’s been less than a month and I already need to make a 2nd batch (I gave some as gifts, which was appreciated, although I’d not be ashamed to say so if I drank it all myself). Bramble on!
